The Second 2024 Presidential Debate Part 1!
So the first debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris has happened and it was an interesting event. In the nearly two hour debate many topics were covered and both candidates had a lot to say. Because of the amount of content covered here I wanted to break the debate into 2 parts to make it easier to digest. With that being said, lets break it down.
The moderators began the night by bringing up the economy. Harris answered first stating her plan for the economy which would include things such as a $6,000 tax cut to middle class families, and a $50,000 tax deduction to start up small businesses. She then attacked Trump's plan stating that he wanted to provide a tax cut for billionaires, and add a 20% sales tax on everyday goods. Trump then had a chance to respond. He stated that he planned on imposing tariffs on other countries, but then quickly moved on to critiquing the economy under the Biden administration stating "We have inflation like very few people have ever seen before, probably the worst in our nations history". Harris responded again critiquing how the Trump administration left the country, and stated that Trump was going to lay out the ground work for Project 2025. Trump the denied having any connection to Project 2025 stating he hadn't even read it, and stated that his plan was to cut taxes. The debate then continued with both candidates debating over the economic policies of the Trump administration. After some back and forth over the Trump administrations economic dealings with China the Moderators moved on to the next topic. The next topic up for debate would be the issue of abortion. Moderator Linsey Davis question Trump's stance on the matter first mentioning how he touted he was responsible for killing Roe v. Wade, and how his stance on how his stance on the six-week abortion ban has gone back and forth. Trump stated that his reasoning for changing his position was because there were some cases in which officials were favoring to have abortions in the 9th month or even after birth. Trump stated that his goal was to get the decisions over abortion laws back to the states. Moderator Davis then gave the floor to Harris, but before doing so corrected Trump stating that there was no state that allowed abortion in the 9th month. It was then Harris's turn to speak where she criticized Trump for his actions against Roe v. Wade and promised to sign a bill to protect Roe v. Wade. Trump responded saying that he gave the public what they wanted and that was to send it back to the states for them to decide. The next topic of debate was immigration. Harris' stated that she had tried to get a bill passed that would have seen improvements to the border situation like adding 1,500 more agents. The candidates went back and forth with each other over their handling of the border situation, before Trump stated that we would use the National Guard and local police to deport illegal immigrants. The next topic discussed was the fact that in recent statement while running for President Harris has changed her stance on a few issues. Harris stated that her values had not changed, but after giving examples of some of her values and actions she has taken in office, she never answered why her positions had changed. Trump the made it out that Harris was actually lying about her current stances and would go back to her original ones when in office. So as you can see a lot was discussed, and a lot of back and forth has been happening. The candidates have so far been very critical of each other and their policies. We will break down the rest of the debate in part 2!
