Protests continue in Israel after the deaths of 6 hostages.
Yesterday 6 hostages were killed in Gaza by the Hamas organization. In response to these deaths the citizens of Israel have taken to the streets to demand action from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and to demand that a ceasefire be negotiated so that other hostages can be released.
How did we get here though? What caused this to happen? Lets break it down. Before I begin there is something I need to state. The synopsis I give of this conflict cannot and will not explain every detail about this issue. This is a very intricate and sensitive topic that I will not do justice by briefly explaining it. I hope that by giving this synopsis of past and current events that people will have at least a foothold to begin their own research into this issue. As I stated the issues between Israel and Palestine are quite intricate, the problems between the two nations began in the early 20th century and the declaration of the statehood of Israel by Jewish leaders in 1948 is where conflicts really began. Over the years many conflicts have happened in the region over issues such as territory and refugees. That hastily brings us to more modern times in which there is currently conflict happening between the two nations once again. On many news reports you will also see this conflict labeled as the Israeli-Hamas war, but what is Hamas? Hamas is the political organization that took control in the Gaza strip in 2007 and who is currently fighting against Israel at this time. Their goal it seems is to establish an Islamic state in place of Israel. On October 7th 2023 Hamas began an attack on the Israeli border killing many and taking many hostage. There have been many attempts to negotiate a ceasefire between the two parties in an attempt to secure the safety of the hostages that Hamas has taken. On Saturday, August 31st recovered the bodies of 6 hostages who had been killed by Hamas just before they were found according to Israeli sources. In the wake of this tragedy there have been many things that have occurred. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has stated there will be retaliation for these deaths, Hamas has stated that if more hostages are attempted to be freed by any means other than a deal more will die, and there are now protests by the citizens of Israel. The citizens protesting are demanding that more action be taken to protect the hostages and that a ceasefire be agreed upon so that hostages can be brought home.

This topic is incredibly nuanced, and I think breaking it down in this format is difficult. I appreciated how you caught audiences up to date with how the conflict began and who Hamas is because that is quite confusing and unclear to those who are unaware of the genocide and war going on. I think remaining acknowledging the atrocities both sides have committed rather than just Hamas' retaliations to Israel and Netanyahu would create more clarity. 41,569 Palestinians have been killed and 1,139 Israelis have been killed since October 7, 2023 (Al Jazeera). I also agree that ceasefire deals and hostage releases continue to be a recurring disagreement between Hamas and Israel, however, you never mention Israel keeping hostages either. This conflict is difficult to wrap heads around and I think it would be worth mentioning. Your blog topic is a great idea, and I look forward to reading future posts of yours this semester.
